As we said in part one of this mini-blog series (click here if you missed it), the best restaurant flooring is often several different flooring materials. And, although there are many great commercial flooring options, some work better in certain areas. Today we’ll look at some of the options to consider for your lobby or waiting area, back of house including the kitchen and offices, and restrooms.
The Lobby
Whether you have a waiting area with seating and a check-in station or your guests seat themselves, the entry of your restaurant makes an impression on your diners. You want the restaurant flooring to say that this establishment is clean, well-maintained, and trendy. For that reason, luxury vinyl flooring may be a great choice. Tile may also be a good option as long as you ensure it has some slip resistant properties. Both stand up well to water and are easy to clean.
Back of House
In the kitchen and offices, you’ll want to look at four primary properties of the flooring material you’re considering. They are:
- Durability
- Moisture-Resistance
- Slip-Resistance
- Maintenance/Cleaning Ease
When it comes to restaurant flooring options for the kitchen, we have two materials we recommend most. First is ceramic tile. It’s relatively durable and waterproof. When you choose the right tiles, they are fairly sip resistant. They are easy to clean and low on the maintenance scale. The second flooring option we recommend for commercial kitchens and back of house is epoxy flooring. It is more impact resistant than tile. Some epoxy flooring can be installed with additives to make it more slip resistant than the average tile. It is virtually maintenance free and as easy to clean as tile. A drawback of both of these materials is that they are both exceptionally hard to stand on for hours at a time as your cooks and back of house team do. Most restaurants solve this problem by adding rubber mats for their team’s comfort.
Restrooms
You want your restrooms to look clean and attractive from the flooring to the walls. That means you may want to consider a nicer ceramic tile than you’re planning for the kitchen restaurant flooring if that is your choice. Many restaurants add tile to the walls to prevent having to repaint them frequently. This can really add to the look and lower overall maintenance in the restrooms. Epoxy flooring is another option, but keep in mind if the building settles and the floors crack, you’ll have to do some maintenance and it will be hard to match the original finish.
