Hardwood Flooring Trends

hardwood floors inside a home

About 15 years ago, builders and remodelers began building homes with hardwood floors in Florida. One hundred years ago it was common, but it fell out of favor with tile and vinyl taking over. However, now that hardwood floors are again a popular choice for homeowners, we want to share some of the current hardwood flooring trends in case you’re looking to install new floors in your home or refinish your existing hardwood floors.

Natural Finishes

Whether you’re refinishing your floors or installing new hardwood flooring, a natural finish is a great option. Natural finishes allow the beauty of the wood to shine. It also never goes out of style. Because white oak and hickory, two of the more popular wood species used in hardwood flooring, are neutral in color, choosing a natural finish leaves you with a neutral color pallet to design the décor of your home around.

Wide Planks

Although a more expensive option, they are one of the biggest hardwood flooring trends that we believe has true staying power. Anything five inches or wider is considered wide plank flooring. The emergence of wood look tile and luxury vinyl plank is driving this trend. We love how wide planks can make a room feel larger. If your budget won’t allow for wide planks, ask your flooring company about mixing floor width and length for a visually interesting floor. Along with wider planks comes the trend of longer boards as longer boards with wider planks is more aesthetically pleasing.

Matte Finishes

When a homeowner asks our recommendation for finish, we recommend a matte finish. There are several advantages. First, it doesn’t show dirt as quickly as a higher sheen finish. Second, it looks better longer. Not that it’s any stronger or more durable than an equivalent glossy product, it just doesn’t show imperfections as quickly. Finally, it allows the wood grain to be the star, especially when you choose a natural finish.

Hardwood Flooring Throughout the Home

In some of the first homes in the Tampa area built with hardwood flooring, the builders only put hardwood in the great room and dining area and occasionally master bedroom. One of today’s hardwood flooring trends (and overall flooring trends) is the same flooring in the living spaces throughout the home, yes even the kitchen. Only bathrooms and laundry rooms tend to have a water durable flooring.
