In our last blog, we shared answers to some of the frequently asked questions about luxury vinyl products. One of those questions was regarding laminate flooring and luxury vinyl tile or plank (LVT/LVP). Which one is better? Both are growing in popularity, and they each differ significantly from the products of a decade ago. Many of our clients also prefer to see a side-by-side rundown of each so they are able to compare and contrast. Keeping that in mind, here are some things to consider when choosing between laminate flooring or luxury vinyl tile.
Is LVP or Laminate More Environmentally Friendly?
Although some LVP has phthalates, not all does. Phthalates are not banned in flooring materials specifically, however, many manufacturers have begun to phase them out of their products. Your flooring company can guide you away from products with phthalates if that is a concern for you. When it comes to luxury vinyl products, there are no volatile organic compounds. Laminates, on the other hand, do emit VOCs. Some laminate manufacturers use recycled and wood byproduct materials which is an environmentally friendly practice.
Better Value
High-end products exist in both categories. If you compare products of the same quality and attention to detail in the flooring pattern with the same life expectancy, you’ll find that cost is comparable between laminate and luxury vinyl products.
Room by Room
If you need flooring for your bathroom or laundry room, avoid laminate. Laminate and water don’t do well together. If you are putting flooring in a sunroom or in an area where there will be a lot of sunlight and have concerns about fading, you may want to choose laminate as it resists fading better. Otherwise, as long as you choose a quality product, you will likely be happy with either laminate or luxury vinyl tile in other rooms.
Better to Walk and Stand On?
If you walk on laminate or luxury vinyl tile which has been installed on the same type of subfloor, you’ll notice several differences. LVT and LVP have a bit more give, and they are much quieter. Even when a sound-absorbing underlayment is installed, you may notice a distinctly hollow sound with laminate flooring.
