Choosing the Right Flooring for Each Room

Hardwood FlooringIf you’re considering new flooring in your entire home, you may be wondering what is the best material for each room. Although hardwood flooring can be a great choice for much of your home, it’s not the best option for your entire home. Of course, the right flooring option for your family, lifestyle, taste and budget may not be the best choice for everyone, so we’ll give you a few options for each room.

Living Rooms & Great Rooms

From your entryway through your main living space, hardwood flooring is the most desired choice. Hardwood floors last for decades, can be refinished many times and look great with any décor. However, they’re among the most expensive of flooring options, and depending on the wood species, may scratch easily.

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT), engineered wood and tile are other popular options. All come in styles and colors that mimic wood if you want the look without the care. LVT and tile come in many shapes, patterns and colors to suit any decor. If your great room connects to a pool area and water is a concern, LVT is waterproof and may be the right choice. The drawback is that it only lasts about ten years. Engineered wood is less expensive than real hardwood but can’t be refinished as often.

Wet Areas

Wet areas are your kitchen, bathrooms and laundry room. We almost never recommend engineered wood or hardwood flooring in any wet area other than the kitchen. LVT and tile are your best options in those rooms because neither are damaged by standing water or humidity. Keep in mind that tile can be hard on your back and feet if you stand on it for long time periods.

Bedrooms

Although almost any flooring works in the bedroom, the three most popular choices in Clearwater are carpet, tile and hardwood. Tile is great for homes along the beaches as the sand doesn’t scratch most tile and it’s easy to clean. Hardwood flooring is a strong contender, especially for homes with one-level living. If you want all the rooms in your home to flow together, hardwood flooring accomplishes this goal. If you want something soft to step on when you get out of bed each morning, runners and area rugs can add extra style to a room with wood or tile. Many homeowners still choose traditional carpet in the bedrooms. With the limited life expectancy of carpet, you may want to compare the cost of replacing the carpet in 5-10 years with the cost of tile, engineered wood or hardwood flooring.
