Rugs that move around with even a little dirt underneath can also mar your flooring. The solution is to use a quality rug pad. We recommend natural wool or natural rubber rug pads. Never use the sticky rug tape to keep rugs in place or synthetic or plastic rug pads.
Felt-Style Furniture Protectors
These usually have a self-adhesive backing on them to stick to the wood of the table or chair legs. You’ll want to check them periodically. Better ones actually screw into the wood legs of your furniture so they don’t come off over time. Just make sure the screws are recessed so they’re not able to scratch your floors.
Indoor and Outdoor Welcome Mats
A mat outside your door will get off some dirt, however, if you have a rug inside your door that people can also wipe their feet on, you’ll see less dirt and debris in your home. Dirt and debris are two things that can scratch floors. Of course, the best solution to protect wood flooring from scratches due to foot traffic is to ask all guests and family to remove their shoes at the door.
Clean Regularly
You’ll be amazed at how much you sweep up even with regular cleaning. All the dirt that comes into your home can scratch your floors when it is walked on. This is especially true if you are near the beach or if you frequent the beach and track sand home. Sand will scratch and dull your floor’s finish quickly.
Trim Your Pet’s Nails
Your pet’s toenails can scratch the finish on and leave indentations in your flooring. Keeping your pet’s nails trimmed will reduce both surface scratches and deeper markings.
